On your marks for the green transformation

The first step toward hydrogen-based production of steel

Dillinger and Saarstahl are ready and waiting for the transformation. The installation of the coke-oven gas injection system on the blast furnaces of ROGESA Roheisengesellschaft Saar mbH, a joint subsidiary of Dillinger and Saarstahl, is an investment of prime importance for the future. The total costs, of some 14 million euros, will significantly reduce CO2 emissions at Dillinger and Saarstahl and will create the preconditions for the use of hydrogen in steelmaking practice. The new installation has a potential for savings of 120,000 to 150,000 tonnes of CO2 each year.

The use of hydrogen in the production of steel is a key factor in reducing CO2 emissions. For the first time ever in Germany, the new system installed at Dillingen will use hydrogen as the reductant on the blast-furnace production route in normal operation. The highly hydrogen-rich coke-oven gas, consisting of more than 55% pure hydrogen and, in addition, produced in a process forming part of the integrated steelmaking plant, will be used for this purpose. This creates the preconditions for operation of the blast furnaces using "green" hydrogen in future. The coke-oven gas injection system will thus contribute to permanent conservation of resources and to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions.

Our target for 2050: CO2-neutral production of steel

Dillinger and Saarstahl affirm here the targets of the Paris Climate Agreement. In their comprehensive sustainability concept, these companies acknowledge their responsibilities for present and future generations of employees and stakeholders and intend to use sustainable methods for the production of high-quality steel products. Dillinger and Saarstahl aim to tread this path to CO2-neutral production together with their customers. The two companies plan to implement the EU climate targets for 2030 with 55% lower CO2 emissions, and to follow up with completely CO2-neutral production by 2050 at the latest.
